LUC Voile in the Swiss Sailing League

What is the Swiss Sailing League?

The Swiss Sailing League is the Swiss championship in which clubs compete on identical boats provided by the organization. The regattas are short, fast-paced, and take place over several stages throughout the season. There are several leagues: the Super League, the Challenge League, the Promotion League, two women’s leagues, and a youth league.

We, CVV x LUC, have two teams competing: a co-ed team in the Promotion League and an all-women’s team in the Women’s Super League.

In this format, only half the fleet races at a time: races are held with 6 to 8 boats, and the crews rotate each time. So everyone ends up racing against each other, and on a different boat for each race. What makes these events truly unique is that the boats are provided and ready to go on site: you arrive, hop aboard, and off you go for the regatta.

Regatta 1 – Promotion League in Lausanne (May 10–11)

Our mixed team was in Lausanne for the first regatta of the season. The wind was very light all weekend, which limited the number of races we could sail.

Saturday: We raced just one heat, finishing 5th out of 8.

Sunday: two more races, under the same difficult conditions, in which we finished 7th out of 8 both times.

With only three races over the weekend, it was hard to make up ground. We finished 13th out of 16. It’s not the result we were hoping for, but weekends like this are part of the game.

Race 2 – Women’s Super League in Neuchâtel (Ascension weekend)

The following weekend, our women's team competed in a regatta in Neuchâtel. It was the first time all five of us had sailed together.

On Saturday, in winds of about 6 knots, we sailed three races, finishing 4th, 4th, and 3rd out of 6.

Unfortunately, there was no sailing on Sunday because of the wind.

We finished 7th out of 12 overall, tied on points with Morges, which came in 6th. We’re very happy with this first result. The team worked well together, and we already have plenty of ideas on how we can improve. With a little more practice, we know we can do even better!
